This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct underground truck operations in Metalliferous mining.
This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.
Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.
Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for underground truck operations | 1.1 Access, interpret and apply underground tuck operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities 1.5 Perform equipment pre-start checks and ensure equipment is ready for operation 1.6 Carry out start-up procedures 1.7 Inspect and assess site conditions to determine if scaling is required and take action according to site requirements 1.8 Adhere to emergency procedures and ensure safety of others, equipment and site 1.9 Use approved dust suppression and extraction methods 1.10 Communicate to others verbally or in writing end of shift information to oncoming shift |
2. Load material | 2.1 Check work area for spillage prior to entering the loading area to prevent plant and tyre damage 2.2 Position truck for loading clear of services 2.3 Remain in truck when loading or at safe distance from loading operation |
3. Haul material | 3.1 Drive and operate truck safely within working environment limitations and road conditions, observing safe driving conventions 3.2 Confirm type of material and haul to designated location 3.3 Communicate with others using site communication systems and methods 3.4 Maintain hauling efficiency by managing working environment 3.5 Monitor and manage equipment performance using appropriate indicators to aid efficient operations 3.6 Identify, remove, and dispose of contaminants 3.7 Identify and manage spillages on hauling surface 3.8 Ensure tray is in the correct position before equipment is in motion |
4. Discharge material | 4.1 Check safety provisions are in place before entering and leaving tipping site 4.2 Position truck in safe area 4.3 Discharge load 4.4 Lower or retract tray fully before driving off the tipping area |
5. Carry out operator maintenance | 5.1 Carry out shutdown procedures 5.2 Service and make minor adjustments to equipment |

Evidence of Performance
Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:
locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
implements procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient conducting of underground truck operations including:
performs pre start checks, identifies and reports issues prior to commencing operations
identifies hazards, risks and environmental issues that may affect operations, corrects within authorised capability and report these to their supervisor
establishing safety provisions before discharging materials
conducting routine housekeeping to maintain equipment condition and the work environment
works effectively with others to conduct underground truck operations and meet all of the required outcomes including:
using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others
complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
demonstrates completion of conducting underground truck operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:
driving and manoeuvring truck smoothly, adjusting operations for the work environment and road conditions
correctly positions the truck for loading of loading of materials
positioning tray correctly before moving vehicle from loading or after discharging
hauls materials to designated locations
identifying and managing spills on the haul surface
identifying, removing and disposing of contaminants
correctly positions the truck for discharge of materials
undertakes approved truck shutdown procedures
identifies issues with equipment and makes minor adjustments
Evidence of Knowledge
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when conducting underground truck operations:
interpreting ground conditions
equipment parking
operational procedures and checks
equipment processes, technical capability and limitations
road rules
adhering to manufacturer’s specifications
towing methods
Assessment Conditions
An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
this unit must be assessed in compliance with relevant legislation/regulation and using policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals directly related to the industry sector for which it is being assessed; and,
assessment may be conducted in conjunction with the assessment of other Units of Competency; and,
assessment must confirm consistent performance can be applied in a range of relevant workplace circumstances; and,
assessors must demonstrate the performance evidence, and knowledge evidence as outlined in this Unit of Competency, and through the minimum years of current* work experience specified below in an Industry sector relevant to the outcomes of the unit; or,
where the assessor does not meet experience requirements a co-assessment or partnership arrangement must exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry subject matter expert. The Industry subject matter expert should hold the unit being assessed (or an equivalent unit) and/or demonstrate equivalence of skills and knowledge at the unit level. An Industry technical expert must also demonstrate skills and knowledge from the minimum years of current work experience specified below in the Industry sector, including time spent in roles related to the unit being assessed; and,
assessor and Industry subject matter expert requirements differ depending on the Australian Qualifications Framework Level (AQF) of the qualification being assessed and/or Industry Sector as follows:

*Assessors can demonstrate current work experience through employment within Industry in a role relevant to the outcomes of the Unit; or, for external assessors this can be demonstrated through exposure to Industry by conducting frequent site assessments across various locations.
